The
Sunday Side or 5th XI compete in the Palace Shield Sunday Division A. In
previous years the team has been a strong one that always contends for the
little however this season performances fell away as other teams took
priority and therefore left little to pick from due to cup matches and
rearranged league games. The crowning moment for the team was winning the
league in 2005 after being runners up in the previous season and coming
close the season before that. again in 2006 the team did well but
incomplete and rain affected games meant the side did not manage to retain
the title.
The
Sunday XI has always been a mixture of youth and experience bringing
together mainly 2nd and 3rd team youngsters giving 3rd team players a
chance to play on better wickets at club main grounds and 2nd team players
the chance to take more responsibility in games. This team has shown the
benefits with helping young players make their way through the teams and
now play a vital role within the club 1st XI with both opening bowlers and
both opening batsmen having played in this team when they were younger.

BLACKPOOL
SUNDAY XI – END OF SEASON REPORT
The
Sunday Development XI season started with the intentions of bringing on
all young players, and playing on better wickets, and finishing as high as
we could in the league.
The
season kicked off with a bang, with young Nathan Bird taking 4-4 from 3
overs, and Knocker smashing his way to 45 not out.
The season continued like this with great victories, and
‘silly’ defeats.
Throughout
the season, the team grew, but due to unavailability and cup games on the
same days, the team ended up joint 4th, (winning 6, losing 4,
abandoned 2), which in my eyes was still a great finish to the season.
It
was pleasing to see different faces each week performing, with the
youngsters all showing their worth in the team, with some great individual
performances, and then re-grouping when games got difficult, which takes a
lot for a young team to do so. Most
weeks the team was made up of nine – under 19’s, which shows quality
in the juniors, whether it would be batting or bowling first in different
conditions.
By
the end of the season, you could see that all players knew where they
wanted to improve, with a big key factor being – alertness, atmosphere
in the field, and abit more application.
Plenty
of time to improve boys, well done to all with a generally good season,
you should all be proud of yourselves.
